Moral Vagueness and Epistemicism

چکیده
Epistemicism is one of the main approaches to phenomenon vagueness. But how does it fare in its treatment moral vagueness? This paper has two goals. First, I shall explain why various recent arguments against an epistemicist approach vagueness are unsuccessful. Second, how, my view, reflection on Sorites can inform normative ethics powerful and interesting ways. In this connection, be putting work, engaging with a family somewhat neglected issues concerning continuity that lie at interface metaphysics ethics.

Fuzzy Epistemicism∗
It is taken for granted in much of the literature on vagueness that semantic and epistemic approaches to vagueness are fundamentally at odds. If we can analyze borderline cases and the sorites paradox in terms of degrees of truth, then we don’t need an epistemic explanation. Conversely, if an epistemic explanation suffices, then there is no reason to depart from the familiar simplicity of class...

John Burgess has recently argued that Timothy Williamson’s attempts to avoid the objection that his theory of vagueness is based on an untenable metaphysics of content are unsuccessful. Burgess’s arguments are important, and largely correct, but there is a mistake in the discussion of one of the key examples. In this note I provide some alternative examples and use them to repair the mistaken s...
متن کاملSpatial Vagueness and Second-Order Vagueness
This paper presents a geometric characterization of geographic objects with vague boundaries. Since the framework is based on ordering geometry and does not rely on numerical concepts, it can be applied to qualitative spatial reasoning. The characterization describes vague regions and gradual transitions between two vague regions. This approach takes into account that the region of all points t...
متن کاملHigher-Order Vagueness and the Vagueness of ‘Vague’
Sorensen (1985) has argued that ‘vague’ is itself a vague predicate; it is just as sorites-prone as its positive instances. This result has been exploited by Hyde (1994) in an ingenious attempt to establish that vague predicates must necessarily suffer from higher-order vagueness. More precisely, Hyde has argued that the vagueness of ‘vague’ ensures that the “paradigmatic conception”, according...
